Yussif Chibsah, a former Asante Kotoko midfielder, disclosed that he purchased three tracts of land in Accra after receiving a hefty transfer fee from Kotoko.
The former Black Stars player disclosed that Asante Kotoko paid him GH50 million to sign with the club in 2003 instead of Hearts of Oak.
He relates that he met with Hearts of Oak and had positive discussions, but Kotoko management led by Sylvester Asare-Owusu (now Bantemahene) discovered the meeting, invited him to Kumasi, and gave him a blank cheque for any amount.
“Hearts of Oak was the first to demonstrate interest in me. They had a Dr. Sampene representative in Accra. He drove me to Accra so that I could meet Nii-Ayi Bontey…After speaking with Nii-Ayi Bonayi, we visit Ajax Park, Hearts’ training facility. Not knowing that someone has tipped off Kotoko.
“Soon after I departed the training facilities, Mr. Frank Owusu Owusu of Kotoko called me…He and I met at Asylum Down. They did not even allow me to go home before them. From the location directly to Kumasi…Bantemahene handed me a blank cheque and instructed me to write any amount. Because he wished for me to play for Kotoko, I should submit any sum. And I responded that I cannot do so. What he has done is sufficient. He should provide me with what he believes I deserve.
They gave me 50 million Ghana cedis, and I bought three parcels of land. I purchased three parcels in Accra. “At the time, a plot in Accra cost GH12 million, while the one I purchased in Kumasi cost GH10 million,” he explained to Dan Kwaku Yeboah.
Yussif Chibsah joined Asante Kotoko in 2003 from King Faisal and remained at the club for three years before joining IFK Mariehamn of Finland.
