In a widely shared video, members of the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) are shown assaulting a bystander.
According to reports, the incident occurred on June 17, 2023, in Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region.
Although it is unclear what started the altercation, some bystanders can be heard claiming that the policeman struck the civilian first.
The police officer, who was wearing a white and black uniform, can be seen grappling with a bystander in the footage. The man attempted to get away from the cop at one point, and the officer hit him in the face.
However, the policeman was still holding on to the man as some onlookers attempted to break up the brawl.
The victim was making every effort to escape the officer’s hold, but he was holding on and said he had to make an arrest.
“The police officer first lifted his hands… We were all present… He had no right to strike a bystander.
“He (the citizen) has not broken any laws. One of the observers could be heard yelling in Twi, “It is your obligation to defend us, not hit us.
