Diana Oppong, a 17-year-old second-year student at the Jedu Technical and Vocational Institute in Wamahinso, Asutifi North, Ahafo Region, was reportedly battered to death by her boyfriend.
Diana Oppong died on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at the Sunyani Regional Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment following the event.
Diana’s boyfriend, who has only been known as Kofi and is also a final-year student at the same college, allegedly beat her to a pulp on July 18, 2023, after a misunderstanding about a rumored pregnancy.
The deceased apparently fainted but recovered consciousness and went to the Terchire police station, where she was given a police medical form and told to seek medical assistance.
Mr. Boakye Yiadom, the deceased’s grandfather, told GhanaWeb over the phone that she was initially treated at the Terchire Health Centre but had to be rushed to the St John of God Hospital in Duayaw Nkwanta and later the Sunyani Regional Hospital when her condition worsened.
“She was beaten by a boy we believe to be her boyfriend, and she collapsed as a result.” She was treated at Terchire Health Centre, but her health deteriorated, so she was transferred to Duayaw Nkwanta and then to Sunyani Regional Hospital, where she died.”
Mr. Boakye Yiadom continued, “The family is devastated by her death because she was full of life and loved by everyone in the family and community.”
“We are devastated by the news of her death because she had her entire life ahead of her and was loved by many people, but this incident has cut it short, and we are in great pain as a family.”
He urged the authorities to guarantee that the perpetrator is brought to justice for the atrocity.
Meanwhile, the suspect has been arraigned before the Duayaw Nkwanta Magistrate Court and placed in custody for two weeks, with a reappearance scheduled for August 11, 2023.
