Niger coup: ECOWAS is set to meet on August 10 to take final decision

Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and President of Nigeria has called for an emergency meeting to discuss methods to end the rebellion in Niger.

Recall that on Sunday, August 6, 2023, ECOWAS leaders issued a directive to the military Junta to give over power to a democratic government commanded by President Mohammed Bazoum or face military intervention.

The military Junta has shown no signs of complying with the directive, prompting ECOWAS to convene a meeting to discuss the next steps.

Ahmed Bola Tinubu, chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stated prior to the meeting that ECOWAS will not tolerate a military rebellion in the West African sub-region and is prepared to retaliate against the military junta in Niger.

“We will not permit coup after coup in the subregion of West Africa. Democracy is extremely difficult to administer, but it is the best form of governance, and we all believe in it, so we will take this matter seriously. According to citinewsroom.com, the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) stated that “we can’t be toothless bulldogs.”

It is believed that the military Junta in Niger closed the country’s airspace until further notice on August 7, 2023, citing the possibility of a military intervention by ECOWAS.

The spokesperson for the military junta in Niger has stated that the country’s armed forces are prepared to defend the nation should ECOWAS proceed with the military intervention.

The Soldiers abolished the nation’s constitution, suspended all institutions, and sealed its borders to prevent invasion.

Mohamed Bazoum, the president of Niger, was detained by the presidential guard while US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken assured him of his “unwavering support.”

Jihadist unrest has provoked coups in Mali and Burkina Faso in recent years.
