More than GH1.8 million of the cash provided to compensate poultry farmers impacted by the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) illness in 2022 could not be accounted for, according to the report by the Auditor General.
To compensate farmers who lost birds to the sickness between 2015 and 2018, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) provided a total of GH1.9 million.
To compensate farmers for losses incurred as a result of the 2015–2018 epidemic of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, the Ministry of Finance issued a total of GH1,999,768.10.
The Auditor General’s report on public finances of ministries, departments, and agencies in 2022 revealed, “We noted that only GH191,730.00 was paid to 10 farmers, leaving GH1,808,038.10 unaccounted for.”
Therefore, the AG advised that the MoF’s top official pursue compensation for the injured farmers and the recovery of the unaccounted-for sum from the MoFA’s top official.
