Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) national communications officer, has said that Friday, June 30, 2023, is probably when the Assin North member-elect would be sworn in.
He claims that the swearing-in might take place on Friday if the Electoral Commission of Ghana officially notifies the Parliament of Ghana today of Quayson’s victory on Thursday, June 29, 2023, according to 3news.com.
“In accordance with the legislation, the EC will have to formally notify the August House of Parliament of the by-election results via writ.
We are aware that the procedure is ongoing, but we had hoped that formal notification would have been given to parliament by the end of today. Sammy Gyamfi was quoted as saying to journalists in Accra on Thursday, “Our aim is that by tomorrow, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Assin North shall be sworn in in parliament.
Earlier, according to a news article by graphic.com.gh, Gyakye Quayson would be sworn in on Thursday according to Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament.
Regarding the election in Assiniboine North:
According to the announcement made by the Electoral Commission, James Gyakye Quayson received a total of 17,245 votes, or 57.56% of the total votes cast.
Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who was his closest rival, received 12,630 votes, or 42.15 percent of the vote.
The Liberal Party of Ghana’s (LPG) Bernice Enyonam Sefenu received 87 votes, or 0.29% of the total cast.
In Assin North, a by-election was held to fill the parliamentary seat that became vacant after a legal dispute regarding Quayson’s eligibility to occupy office due to dual citizenship issues.
