A Federal High Court in Abuja has denied the Department of State Services’ (DSS) plea to extend the custody of suspended Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele by 14 days due to supposed fresh evidence acquired against him.
Justice Hamza Muazu denied the motion, characterising it as an abuse of the judicial process and alleging a lack of jurisdiction, which means the court cannot adjudicate on the subject.
The application followed Mr Emefiele’s re-arrest by the DSS from the Federal High Court in Lagos, where the court ordered that he be held in a correctional facility until his bail of 20 million naira ($26,000; £20,000) was paid.
Following court hearings concerning Mr Emefiele’s detention, the DSS and officials from the correctional services engaged into a heated argument on Tuesday.
The DSS has denounced the event and stated that it will examine the brawl involving its officials and jail officers.
The DSS charged Mr Emefiele, 61, with unlawfully having a firearm and ammunition, which he disputes.
His trial is scheduled on November 14th.
